Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Supervisor Child Life Specialist (CLS) demonstrates competence in supporting pediatric patients and family members of patients with medical and psychosocial needs. The CLS contributes to the advancement of safe quality child life practices. Child Life Specialists (CLS) are trained healthcare professionals who work with children and their families helping them cope with the challenges of hospitalization, surgery, illness and disability. They focus on the psychosocial development of children under stress while encouraging valuable coping strategies for them and their families as well.

The Supervisor Child Life Clinical provides leadership and direct day-to-day supervision of staff. Responsible for assuring delivery of safe, efficient, cost effective, age specific child life services. Responsible for and deploys unit strategies designed to meet defined unit and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health clinical, financial and quality initiatives and associated performance and outcome targets. The CLS Supervisor would provide oversight of all Child Life Specialists including promotion, development of individuals and program, execution, and evaluation. Serve as the face of the Child Life Specialist team to providers, staff, and patients. Supervise and provide back-up for Child Life Specialist.

This position will be 16hrs/wk (0.4) of Administrative Duties and 24hrs/wk (0.6) of Clinical work.

Essential Functions:

• Clinical Work: Performs duties similar to the job (Child Life Specialist) it oversees (approximately 60%).

Supervisory Duties: Performs job duties as outlined below (approximately 40%).

  • Human Resource Management: (30%)

In collaboration with Director, assists with the selection of unit child life staff, coordinates unit specific orientation and training, assuring all staff have training to match the needs of the patient population.

• Provides supervision of staff, as assigned; including clinical supervision and developmental coaching.

• Manages staff performance, upholding the rules of conduct and core values through coaching, counseling, goal setting, annual appraisals, and disciplinary action reports in consult with the director.

• Responsible for scheduling unit staff in accordance with master scheduling, collaborating with child life staffing supervisor to ensure sufficient staffing in response to staffing pattern changes, FMLA, vacancies, and holidays.

• Approves/denies time off requests and is responsible for approving bi-weekly time sheets.

• Participates in the development of standards of performance with department and service line leadership.

• Creates a unit work climate which achieves high level employment engagement as measured through department specific metrics.

• Mentor and role models appropriate clinical practice, customer service, team work and problem solving behaviors in an environment that fosters values and the organizations service standards.

• Implements innovative staff recognition programs that acknowledge staff accomplishment at the unit/program level in collaboration with leadership, fostering and maintaining an environment where staff feel valued, appreciated, and recognized.

• Assesses individual and team needs and deploys strategies that foster the succession plan for the team.

• Practices within a shared decision making environment, promoting staff participation on unit/departmental committees.

 • Implements and enforces hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

• In collaboration with Director, establishes clear and consistent role and responsibilities for all child life staff within the assigned unit.

• Builds on strengths and opportunities for the team, creating and supporting an environment that fosters teamwork cooperation, respect, and diversity.

• Works with Director to identify and implement solutions to team needs.

  • Operations Management/Support: (20%)

• Actively participates on unit committees/teams, serving as primary point person for unit as assigned.

• Partners with Child Life team and/or frontline staff to coordinate all facets of patient care planning with multidisciplinary team.

• Provides consultation to develop departmental standards and role models professional behaviors that promote a positive image of child life.

• Represents and provides the child life perspective on hospital-wide committees.

• Participates in the review, revision, and development of Policies & Procedures to reflect hospital and professional practice standards.

• Implements systems that incorporate evidenced-based practice and professional practice standards.

• Executes unit plans to improve patient/family experience by identifying trends, and establishing systems to improve.

• Identifies opportunities for improvement and collaborates with manager(s) to develop an action plan to improve patient outcomes.

• Leads regularly scheduled group meetings in collaboration with managers and directors for assigned area.

• Facilitates clinical supervision groups and other department committees/taskforces, as identified.

• Leads collaborative efforts to support continuous and measurable outcomes through clinical practice, education, research/evidence-based practice, and consultation.

  • Clinical Excellence: (20%)

• Serves as a clinical resource for other child life staff.

• Provides expert child life services to patients and family members, including developmentally-appropriate therapeutic activities, education, procedural preparation, coping facilitation, and support as it relates to their illness and medical treatment.

• Accurately assesses, individualizes, and evaluates plan of care based on family/patient physical, developmental, emotional, and recreational needs.

• Collaborates with and communicates plan of care with interdisciplinary team members.

• Demonstrates compliance with and precepts staff on patient care documentation standards. Implements systems that incorporate evidenced-based practice and professional practice standards.

• Executes unit plans to improve patient/family experience by identifying trends, and establishing systems to improve.

  • Quality/Process Improvement: (20%)

• Collaborates with department leadership team to develop and uphold plans to improve patient/family experiences which includes identifying trends and establishing systems to improve.

• Partners with Child Life Clinical team and/or frontline staff to execute the action plans for measurable continuous improvement in care outcomes.

• Ensures services meet professional standards and regulatory requirements (e.g. Joint Commission, CMS, ACLP, etc.).

• Facilitates department unit staff surrounding development of goals, and producing and tracking measurable outcomes.

• Assures sufficient training and supervision of staff.

• Works collaboratively with manager to identify measureable outcomes for the team that are in line with the nursing and the enterprise strategic plans.

• Supports evidence-based practice by leading and supporting system improvements and measuring outcomes with concise metrics.

• Supports and resources evidence-based practice planning and implementation of educational program/projects.

  • Financial Stewardship: (10%)

• Speaks to department financial needs and philanthropic benefits with potential donors, as needed.

• Collaborates with department leadership and Development Department staff to provide necessary information for grant and donor proposals, as needed.

• Partners with department leadership to identify and execute annual unit based quality improvement initiatives that result in a measurable impact on quality, cost and resource utilization.

• Partners with the manager to assure efficient and cost effective utilization of staffing and hospital resources at the unit level for day to day operations, unit and department programming, adhering to budget constraints.

• Ensures staff compliance to systems that promote quality, efficient and cost effective

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

•Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations.

•Certification in Child Life (CCLS) with required Education and Experience.

•Bachelor’s degree in Child Development, Child Life, Psychology, Therapeutic Recreation or closely related field.

•At least two (2) years of experience as a child life specialist.

•Knowledge and experience with infant, child, and adolescent growth and development.

•Ability to work independently, but also collaboratively and in a positive manner with others.

•Perform work according to PMLGH policies and procedures, professional standards of care, and applicable laws.

•Ability to set goals, prioritize, and achieve results in accordance with the highest standards. Ability to demonstrate clinical leadership skills.

•Provides care with sensitivity and respect.

•Ability to train and supervise staff, students, and volunteers.

• Computer literacy and proficiency with word process and spreadsheet design.
