Summary

This is a 0.3 FTE Sports Medicine fellowship program leadership role, which may be held in conjunction with another clinical role. Work hours are generally daytime M - F, with occasional evening/weekend requirements.

Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The program director must be fully committed to the Sports Medicine program in order to devote sufficient time to the achievement of the educational goals and objectives. Must have demonstrated experience in Sports Medicine, experience in education and scholarly activity, and must have a career commitment to academic Sports Medicine. This position must be based at the primary fellowship teaching center.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

Administrative

  • Preparation and maintenance of a written statement outlining the educational goals of the program with respect to knowledge, skills, and other attributes of fellows for each major rotation or other program assignment. It should also include descriptions of teaching and evaluation methodology. This statement must comply with ACGME program requirements for Sports Medicine, and be distributed to fellows and members of the teaching staff and be readily available for review.
  • Recruitment and selection of fellow for appointment to the program in accordance with ACGME, institutional, and department policies and procedures.
  • Selection and/or supervision/evaluation of the teaching staff and other program personnel.
  • Preparation of an accurate statistical and narrative description of the program as requested by the ACGME and RRC.
  • Assist FMR in the oversight of the family medicine residency Sports Medicine, Musculoskeletal Medicine Curriculum, and Sports Medicine Area of Concentration.
  • Maintenance of interdisciplinary relationships with other key specialties relevant to Sports Medicine for the purposes of education, improved patient care, and collaboration on educational, QI, and research projects.
  • Development and maintenance of formal written affiliation agreements between participating long-term care institutions and the program.
  • Development and maintenance of relationships with regional Sports Medicine training programs and other relevant training programs.
  • Collaboration with the LGHP Sports Medicine clinical manager to make schedules for fellows and faculty, and to assure both high quality patient care and optimal teaching environment in the LGHP Sports Medicine clinical domains.
  • Regular participation in relevant family medicine residency faculty and committee meetings.
  • Participate in the Graduate Medical Education Committee

Clinical

  • Maintenance of a continuity Sports Medicine outpatient practice
  • Participation in the LGHP Sports Medicines call schedule as consistent with the FTE’s spent working with the group.

Teaching/Supervisory

  • Supervision of fellows through explicit written descriptions of supervisory lines of responsibility for the care of patients. Such guidelines must be communicated to all members of the program staff. Residents must be provided with prompt, reliable systems for communication and interaction with supervisory physicians.
  • Participation in and oversight of fellow supervision in the outpatient office, Sports Medicine assessment team, and game coverage.
  • Participation in and oversight of supervision and teaching for family medicine resident clinical rotation.
  • Provision of verbal and written evaluations of teaching staff, fellows, and residents at appropriate intervals, and maintaining a permanent record of the evaluations.
  • Provision of a written final evaluation for each fellow who completes the program.
  • Implementation of fair procedures, as established by the sponsoring institution, regarding academic discipline and fellow complaints or grievances.
  • Participation in the family medicine residency block conference curriculum, teaching both Sports Medicine and general family medicine topics.

Scholarly Activity

  • Active participation in clinical discussion, rounds, and conferences in a manner that promotes a spirit of inquiry and scholarship.
  • Active participation in regional or national professional and scientific societies (e.g. STFM, PAFP, AAFP, AMSSM), particularly through attendance and presentations at the organizations’ meetings and publication in their journals.
  • Participation in research, particularly in projects that are funded following peer review and/or result in publications or presentations at regional and national scientific meetings. These projects would be developed in collaboration with the Family Medicine Residency’s Center for Primary Care Research, and with regional academic Sports Medicine programs.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Medical Doctor (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) or M.T. is required, issued by the Accreditation Council on Medical Education (for M.D., D.O.) or State Board of Medicine, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (for M.T.).
  • Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine
  • At least two years patient care experience to include Sports Medicine.
  • At least two years of teaching experience.
  • A health care provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs, i.e. not excluded from participation in Medicare, Medicaid or any other federal or state health insurance program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least three years clinical patient care experience to include Sports Medicine.
  • At least three years of teaching experience.
  • Community service, as integrated into the college and medical school experience.

COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS

  • A large portion of this position required reliance on verbal memory and new learning. Efficiency in processing of verbal information, either in written or spoken form, is a major requirement and prerequisite of the job. The individual must be able to attend to and process multiple bits of information simultaneously. The individual must be able to organize and categorize this information effectively so that later recall is feasible.

PROBLEM SOLVING, REASONING AND CREATIVE THINKING – The following level of ability that is essential for the jobholder to think (in order to solve a problem) by combining two or more elements from past experience or imaginative thought:

  • The position required much autonomy of thought and problem solving. The individual must be able to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems.  The individual must be able to think abstractly, which is manifested in the ability to form concepts, use categories, generalize from single instances, apply procedural rules and general principles, and be aware of subtle or intrinsic aspects of a problem. The development of hypothesis and potential solutions to problems involves careful interpretation, analysis and diagnosis. The individual must be able to collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. The individual must be able to think creatively with a degree of inventiveness, experimentation and intuition. They must be able to deal with a variety of concrete and abstract variables.
