Summary

This full-time, certified, master's-prepared genetic counselor candidate will have a strong interest in working with oncology patients and their families.

Must have 1 year of experience to qualify.

This position requires a collaborative team approach, a drive for self-learning, resiliency, the ability to multi-task, effective communication skills, a robust work ethic, and commitment to the program's growth and development.
This role works day shift at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute on LGH's Surburban Outpatient Pavilion campus. There are occasional evening and/or weekend hours required for oncology community educational events hosted by ABBCI. Sign on bonus w/ 2 -year commitment

Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: Under general supervision, provides genetic counseling to high risk patients and their families.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  • In cooperation with the physician, provides genetic counseling to high risk patients and their families.
  • Investigates family history, interprets information concerning genetic disorders, explains risks and advises patient of the importance of informing family members of risks.
  • Coordinates genetic counseling, genetic testing and genetic testing results visits. Utilizes available risk management models and decision trees to determine risk and prior probabilities for patients seeking genetic testing.
  •  Collaborates with medical team in developing recommendations for patients and their family members regarding screening and management of risks.  Communicates with physician and/or nurse practitioner in assessing appropriate genetic testing, and/or cancer screening and management recommendations.
  • Provides genetic counseling service within the standards of practice of the National Society of Genetic Counselors and appropriate state licensure role.
  • Prepares and maintains all clinical documentation records securely respecting confidentiality and privacy of patients.
  • Assists patients with insurance reimbursement and pre-authorization for each genetic test ordered and including appropriate proof of medical necessity.
  • Serves as an educational resource on genetics and genetic counseling.
  • Maintains database of patients seen and statistical information as needed. Analyzes database and provides data reports to administrator related to referral volumes, testing outcomes, research enrollment. Monitors data for trends indicating timeliness of service, volumes requiring additional genetic counseling resources.
  • Participates in clinic visits, conferences and boards as appropriate based specified area of focus (i.e. Oncology, Obstetrics).

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:

  • Monitors appointments.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations.
  • Attends meetings as required. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree preferably in Genetics or Genetic Counseling with 1 year of experience.

  • Genetic Counselor License issued by the PA State Board of Medicine OR temporary permit issued by the PA State Board of Medicine within 8 weeks of hire, and permanent licensure within one year of employment.

  • Certification by the by the American Board of Genetic Counselors (ABGC) within one (1) year of employment.
