POSITION SUMMARY:
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) serves as member of the executive management team and integrating force linking several key aspects of clinical care including:
- Quality and Safety

This position works as a liaison between the medical staff, administration, the employees of the Lancaster General Health System and Penn Medicine. The CMO is responsible for promoting high-quality patient care focusing on the Institute of Medicine aims of Safe, Effective, Efficient, Timely, Patient-Centered and Equitable care.
This position has the direct oversight for the following areas of responsibility:

- Medical Staff Credentialing and Privileging
- Infection Control

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:
- Provides strategic leadership in identifying and creating a focus on quality management, patient safety, and patient satisfaction, in collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer
- Champions efforts to follow evidence-based practice and decrease unnecessary variation in care, using best practice guidelines.
- Promotes coordination of patient care throughout the continuum, i.e. inpatient, ambulatory, clinic practices and post-discharge sites of care.
- Works with executive team to build sustainable continuous organizational clinical improvement utilizing principles of high reliability
- Drives efforts to achieve performance clincal improvement goals across LG Health, in practice units and at the individual provider level
- Leads, along with CNO and COO, performance on all quality , patient safety metric, throughput and patient experience metrics.
- Serves as the entity Patient Safety Officer, or oversees an appropriately designated person
- Sponsors and insures the annual review of the Qualitiy Assurance Performance Improvement plan
- Serves as a key liaison between medical staff and the organization as a whole
- Represents, along with the President of the Medical Staff and Department Chairs, the needs and requirements of the physician community and serves as a key liaison with the medical staff members
- Ensures appropriate monitoring of practice patterns of physicians using Peer Review, FPPE and OPPE reviews
- Maintains full accountability and oversight of medical staff credentialing and privileging processes in accordance with state and federal regulatory standards
- Promotes leadership development among Medical staff members and provides mentoring for current medical leadership while identifying and nurturing future leaders
- Collaborates with PMMG leadership related to LGHP practice management (*), to ensure effective, coordinated, high quality delivery of clinical services.
- Drives compliance with requirements of the Joint Commission, PA DOH and CMS conditions of participation.
- Supports regulatory preparedness across all hospital clinical departments by partnering with hospital administration and medical staff
- Oversees LG Health Clinical Informatics, in coloration with Penn Medicine, including appropriate access and rendering of quality data in accessible and actionable reports
- Develops and implements administrative policies and procedures with clinical application and ensures they are followed
- Translates clinical, business and administrative imperatives to the medical staff and promotes physician alignment with entity goals the entity
- Participates in CMO/CNO council and works collaboratively with UPHS CMO and entity CMOs
- CMO will have direct responsibility for leading LGHP practices in collaboration with PMMG leadership until 7/1/2025, at which point the role will be as described above.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above:
- Participates in regional, state, and national medical group administrative forums, committees, and education programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Medical Doctor (MD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), issued by the Accreditation Council on Medical Education.
- Current Medical licensure issued by PA State Board of Medicine or the PA State Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Excellent communication skills, interpersonal and organizations skills, proven ability to work collaboratively as member of interdisciplinary team, ability to drive results etc.
A health care provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs, i.e. not excluded from participation in Medicare, Medicaid or any other federal or state health insurance program.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's in Business Administration and/or Public Health or related health or business-related field, preferred
- Experience and/or formal training in quality and safety, preferred

- The position requires strong concentration skills. The individual must have the ability to voluntarily sustain concentration to a task over an extended period of time as a result of an effortful and usually deliberate heightened and focused state of attention.
New Learning and Memory:
- A large portion of this position required reliance on verbal memory and new learning. Efficiency in processing of verbal information, either in written or spoken form, is a major requirement and prerequisite of the job. The individual must be able to attend to and process multiple bits of information simultaneously. The individual must be able to organize and categorize this information effectively so that later recall is feasible.
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Creative Thinking:
- The position required much autonomy of thought and problem solving. The individual must be able to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems. The individual must be able to think abstractly, which is manifested in the ability to form concepts, use categories, generalize from single instances, apply procedural rules and general principles, and be aware of subtle or intrinsic aspects of a problem. The development of hypothesis and potential solutions to problems involves careful interpretation, analysis and diagnosis. The individual must be able to collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. The individual must be able to think creatively with a degree of inventiveness, experimentation and intuition. They must be able to deal with a variety of concrete and abstract variables.
